Hands-on Sony Tablets: Tablet Is Sonys!

Sony had already announced its Android kind of new tablets and over again, but at the IFA consumer electronics exhibition in Berlin, did the job officially. The 10.1 "model is the Tablet S, and will ship September 16 for $ 499.99 (16GB) and $ 599.99 (32GB). Folding with two 5.5" screens are the P Tablet and will be sold bundled with AT & T wireless service to an unspecified date ("coming soon") and price.

I had some practice time for both tablets Sony, and do not expect to be a great competitor iPad, which leads people to conclude that you can effectively compete with the Apple tablet. (In a phone in the world, the original Verizon Droid time, that although the iPhone rival, the kingdom was short.) But does anyone know the audience, or they are a sort-of tablets can expect Sony to come up with, and I mean as a compliment. (If you had the Sony VAIO branded products are compressed, they would feel at home for the assembly of desktop and notebook computers.)

A fundamental problem in the construction of a tablet, there is a plausible rival IPAD is that it is difficult to construct equipment that is nothing but a piece of seemingly anonymous rectangular glass and plastic. With S, Sony has managed to build something with its own personality and its unusual design has real benefits. The wedge shape feels good in your hand, folded like a tray, and allows the shelf to sit at a table in a gentle angle, which allows comfortable typing. It's not like all the tablets will imitate this model from now, but I think some people will really like it. (Consciously or unconsciously, but also allows Sony to deselect "the tablet is thinner than the iPad?" Race.)

(LIST: tablets, 'Why buy one instead of the iPad ")

Sony has changed the honeycomb Android a bit ', but judging from my time with the S, was able to improve the user interface, instead of evil. (Unfortunately, the Android has given a modification.) It added the display, which lets you use the most frequently used programs quickly. E 'included in the feature speeds up Web browsing, which does not seem to help. And 'their bundles unlimited music, videos Unlimited, and readers, not used them, and then we can not condemn them, but nudges closer to D than most of the iPad Android tablets integrated package of hardware, software and services.

(There are several ways to use the iPad or iPhone as a remote printer Peel, but all attachments from one type to another.) It 'a certificate PlayStation, which now does not mean all that much of it is a couple of old PlayStation games, and more to come.

I still think that competitors who use wide screen iPhone, most of them apart from the TouchPad, deceased, are making a mistake. Big is good for movies, of course, but that means that the tablet is abnormally high when held vertically, leaving no aspect ratio works well for books, magazines and other reading materials. However, the S 9.4 "screen is rather the result is a tablet that fits in your hands. And the S felt energetic and responsive when I tried

Bottom line: As long as applications honeycomb of the library is poor, a film that sets itself against the iPad is a longshot. But if I were to buy a bar of Android at this time, the S would be on my list. It 'was a nice set of features and just as important as personality.

Meanwhile, the Tablet P gets an A + for creativity pure. It fits in a pocket, but both screens add up screen space more than anything else that is in paperback, including the note Samsung Galaxy. It has most features of the shelf S, except the infrared port.

And judging from my brief time with him, I think you learn to forget the fact that the square-shaped display is actually two screens with a hinge in the middle. (Sony is also to promote the applications created to treat two monitors as a team, as an e-mail on one screen and one in the Inbox.)

The price that AT & T sells P will have a major influence on how well it does. Ultimately, I suspect that consumers consider less as a folding table and more as an alternative iPod Touch with two screens and built-in wireless broadband, and I bet I'm going to those with a high affinity for gadgets will more attracted by what the teeming masses. It seems to me as a spiritual successor to the old company VAIO C-Series machine, device less-than-a-netbook that has not taken away.
